Quiver tree Forest & Giants Castle
The name “Quiver tree forest” comes from the from the native quiver tree ,which is a protected tree. The species is declining due to climate change ,so this remains one of the only spontaneous Quiver tree Forests in the world. The San used to use this tree to make the quivers for their bows ,hence the name. Today the trees are inhabited by social weavers that have massive nests ,where one colony can occupy more than 3 trees. Situated just 13 km from Keetmanshoop and on the outskirts of the Kalahari Basin. The Rest Camp also offers the chance the explore the dolerite rock formations called Giants Playground ,do some night photography or have a once in a lifetime cheetah experience.

A very basic fitness level is required as most of the walks are on even terrain. It is suitable for kids. There are areas where one is exposed to the sun and it can get quite hot but if one does not walk in midday then it it very pleasant

itinerary
+/- 500 km Transfer from Windhoek to Quivertree Forest Rest Camp.
Upon arrival we have a chance of seeing the cheetahs then we set up our camp and enjoy the surroundings before setting out to the Quivertree Forest for Sunset. On the way to the multiple viewponts we can discover the local flora and fauna . The views over the Kalahari is stunning at Sunset. +/- 3 hours excursion.
We start of early with coffee tea and rusks after which make our way to the unique rock formations at Giants Castle. Here we can explore the the area while seeing the beautiful silhouettes that the sunrise casts. After the walk we make our way to the farm for the Cheetah Experience where we get close to the fastest mammals in the world. We have a big brunch when we get back to the camp and spend the afternoon around camp surrounded by Rosecheecked lovebirds , social weavers and dassies. in the evening we can track the stars with night photography.

We rise early to make our way south towards Mariental which is home to the typical Red Kalahari Dunes and unique cultural groups such as the Nama who are part of the Khoekhoe ethnic and have been in southern Africa for thousands of years. The Nama are highly skilled artisans, so their handiwork is highly prized.
Once we arrive at our Accommodation we have time to check in before leaving to explore the geological wonders of the areas. The Artisan Water which rises to temperatures of about 32˚ C and forms natural pools perfect for a warm sundowner.
Afternoon visit to Auros Farm.
Hike +- 1,5 km.
After a leisurely breakfast we make our way back north and make a few stops along route to get to know the community in the area.
