“Out There somewhere…” was the standard reply during my childhood to: “Where is Hannes?”… I guess that is when it all started for me and some things never change.
As a boy growing up on the farm, the thing that fascinated me most was the intricate interactions between different creatures and their environment. The African bush still provides my curious mind with endless wonder at the perfect puzzle which is nature.
It was the natural flow of things that lead me to my first guides training and job as field guide in Namibia when I finished school. In later years I qualified as a SCUBA instructor to also get closer to the wonders of our oceans.
A few years I spent living and working in Germany but the silence of the Namib desert was calling too loudly for me to resist and I moved back to my birthland. Back out there to the wild places, the quiet places, out there where elephants are, where I humbly tremble at night hearing the roar of a nearby lion claiming his deserved respect as head of a pride… Home.
